Warning: Contents of head somewhat dark and twisty- and, frankly, more than a little off.

I did the Octoberfest Sprint Triathlon up in Longmont last weekend and it was a great race! I'm really glad I did it. Nothing but good memories. However, when I saw this photo of the event; this inner dialogue came rushing back into my head...
God, I'm cold!
*I wish I'd put my wetsuit on.
It's just cold outside. The water is warm. Ish.
*Ya, but almost everyone is wearing theirs.
Wimps.
*So what if you freeze. It'll only be for 20min max. You can do anything for 20min.
Fuck. I think I left the coffee on.
*No, I'm pretty sure you turned it off.
Really? No, I don't remember flipping the switch. Shit!
*I think people are staring at my nipples - it's so fucking cold!
You're such a dork.
*I know.
A very, very purpley dork.
*Shut up. It was on sale!!! And it didn't look this... purple... in the picture.
Dude, that's Online Shopping 101. Everything looks much more obnoxious in your living room... or on you.
*Crap. I'm pretty sure I left the coffee on.
SPEEDO GUY!
*EWWWW.
There's at least one at every race.
*Also, I don't think I closed the garage door...
You did. And it's always the guy that shouldn't be anywhere near a Speedo - let alone wearing one.
*Ya, SUN! Come on up!!!! It's nice to see you!
Wow. Yoga in your Speedo - right now? Really?
*Ugh. I do not feel like getting in the water.
Why are there all these tiny, dead fish in the sand?
*Cause I needed even less incentive...
You're gonna be fine. You'll do great. You've got this.
*Right. Someone is in my house right now, stealing everything... but I've totally got this.
Maybe they'll turn the coffee off, after having a cup, before they leave...

And I just want to say, seriously, this is a testament to the fact that my ability to leave the house - at all - is pretty awesome.

Free Spirit and Rule Follower Make Cookies

Max started making chocolate chip cookies all by himself this summer. It's one of his favorite activities now and Alex is always up for helping as well. They make a good team. He reads the directions, measures, dumps, and pours. She sits on the counter and stirs.

Occasionally she'll offer advice... like when he announces it's time to add the nuts.

I don't think you should add nuts, Max. That's not a good idea. Let's not do that. I don't like nuts. Max, sometimes you don't have good ideas.
Well, Alex, it says to add nuts in the recipe! I'm just trying to follow the directions. And it was my idea to make the cookies. That's a good idea.
Okay. Well, just don't add the nuts.
Mom? Do we have to add the nuts? *Why is it on here then?
Max, I told you.
Fine! Stop eating the dough!

Ruby Range Traverse

Email from Tom in August:
"I have a hike in mind that I have wanted to do all summer... now that fall is setting in. Might be too epic , maybe not... It would involve a shuttle to Pittsburgh, an early start, a good day, and someone that wants to do it with me... An abbreviated backwards version of the Ruby Ridge. Starting at Lake Irwin. Ruby, Owen, Purple, Afley, Oh Be Joyful, Hancock and Richmond. Then down the ridge to Daisy pass and into Pittsburgh. I think it would take 10 to 12 hours. Or we could do something else. Give it some thought..."
Reply:
"That sounds fantastic!"

So I went to Crested Butte this past weekend for another quick getaway. To catch up with some dear friends... and some mountains I've been missing for a while.

We did indeed get an early start and left the car near Lake Irwin. This is Ruby in the morning sunlight.

It was super cold and windy once we got to the top of Ruby. There wasn't much point in hanging out so we set out for Owen. It was still extremely cold and windy on top of Owen - so - onward! This is Tom, freezing his ass off, between Owen and Purple. He's so completely in his element. I'm impressed that my numb hands are still functioning at this point!

After Purple, we go on to Afley. The sun is making its way through the clouds more often and the wind has calmed a bit; so we decide to stop for a break. To the east is Mt. Crested Butte.

To the west is Marcellina... and Tom... working on a sketch...

And then there's me in front of the Elk mountains. I'm so happy I can feel my fingers again!!!! Hurry up, Tom!

We've still got a ways to go. Daisy Pass is in the saddle above the green basin on the right.

Looking back at Purple and Owen. I like cairns... particularly this one. Finding one is so satisfying. Where else in life do you get that? This is exactly where you need to be. Right here. And then you move to the next one. I just love that.

I can't remember what peak he's between here, but I do remember what he's thinking:

"Oh, shit! Look at that storm coming our way!"

Thankfully, it was so cold it snowed - and then there was a rainbow!

Finding the smooth, dirt trail at the top of Daisy pass, after scrambling over rocks for 9 hours, was kind of awesome. Can you tell?

And then we walked and talked - through the wildflowers, streams, and, of course, cows - to the other car in Pittsburgh. It was another fantastic adventure... just as we'd hoped.

Spider Monkey

The other day Alex informed me that she was done with ballet - as in it's completely useless to me and also, I don't like to wear tights - and then told me she really wanted to start taking karate lessons - as in I love The Karate Kid and I want to know how to do ALL of those extremely cool, possibly very useful moves! So, she was asking if we could go right now and I was trying to explain that I needed to actually find a place first and sign her up when Max heard us talking and chimed in, "WHAT'S ALEX DOING?! WHY DOES SHE WANT TO TAKE KARATE? WHAT KINDS OF THINGS DO YOU LEARN IN KARATE?"

I thought to myself, that's kind of weird: It's unusual for him to be interested in anything that doesn't directly concern him... and he actually seemed kind of concerned.

Then I caught of glimpse of Alex. She was staring at Max and this smirk began to appear on her face as she sensed his fear. Then she said, very matter-of-factly, "I'M GOING TO LEARN WHAT YOU LEARN IN KARATE, MAX, SO I CAN DO CERTAIN THINGS!!!"

Max just kind of sat there-speechless. Alex just smiled.

Well played, Little One. Well played.

Gratitude

Dear Max,

I just wanted to let you know that I really like getting to know you. As your mother, I know a lot about you. But most of the time I hesitate to say that I really know you. You're constantly surprising me and teaching me about who you are... and, in a lot of ways, about who I am... and it has been such a pleasure to be allowed that insight.
The other day at the pool, you went over to a group of college kids who were playing Ladder Ball and you asked them if you could play also - without an ounce of hesitation! They were a bit taken aback by your request, but they gladly accepted you into the game. You were so happy to be included that anytime you had to move to pick up the ropes you would skip!!! I watched them smile at you and your skipping (not many 7 year old boys are still skipping - especially around a group of older kids) and I was just blown away with your authenticity. You live so clearly in the moment and are so true to whatever emotion you are feeling. Honestly, that is not always ideal, but being authentic does not mean just being happy. I kept watching you with the older boys - it just doesn't ever occur to you to be any other way than who you really are. I think part of that is the beauty of being a kid, but with you, it seems like much more.

In the end, they really enjoyed playing with you and let me know how great they thought you were. Then you looked at me and said, "I told you they'd want to play with me!" So, I promise you, from now on, I will try not to stand your way or hold you back; because clearly you know who you are and what you're doing. I just hope that should you ever begin to doubt yourself or begin to feel insecure about who you are; you'll remember this little boy that you are now... so sure and so pure... and so incredibly special.

Love,
Mom

San Juan Run

Last weekend my friends and I did our 2nd annual San Juan Run where we covered 45 miles of the HardRock 100 course in 3 days. We ran from Mineral Creek from Silverton into Telluride on the 1st day - from Telluride to Ouray on the 2nd - and then did a loop between Ouray and Silverton on the 3rd. The best part about the whole CRAZY adventure, besides amazing scenery like this...
was the fantastic company and all of the laughter. This is Rob, who was my instructor and research advisor in college. He's always been like a sweet, protective big brother (with perfectly inappropriate humor)... not to mention a super supportive friend.
And this is his gorgeous wife, Amy. She is - honestly - always this happy and being around her instantly makes me happy. When I grow up, I want to be just like Amy....

I decided to include this nasty picture of myself because 1. I seem to have this look on my face a lot these days - WTF? - and 2. this was at the top of the 2nd pass (Oscar's) on the first day and Oscar's kicked my ass!!! Thankfully it was all downhill into Telluride from here.

Look at it - this is Oscar's - the zig-zagging line. Holy shit, right!?!

It really hurt!!! Badly!!!! I'm not kidding when I say I was worried about whether I was going to make it to the top -it's not like we had a car at the bottom. I had to get up to get to Telluride - and the clouds were closing in!!! This was where we had just come from - Swamp Grants Pass.
Eventually, I made it.
And it felt SO good!!!! Because my life has felt like that day for the past year. I seriously wonder (on many more days than I'd like to admit) whether I'm going to make it. But mostly, like on this particular day, I'm more surprised at how hard it all is and I think I kind of get stuck in the shock at that realization - hence the constant WTF? stare. So that photo's a nice reminder -to let go -it doesn't matter how I thought things would be -they are what they are.
I have a lot more inner strength than I ever give myself credit for. I'm not sure why. But I'm working on it so that there's more of this...

After a great night with yummy Thai food in Telluride and doughnuts for breakfast, we were off on the second segment - up over Virginius Pass and into Governors Basin, which had some great glissading!

Extremely scientific exploration of the snow pack...

Simultaneously fierce and weird... actually, maybe just weird. The road into Ouray was a long one from here, but I had the Hot Springs to look forward to... and the big slide.

On the third day we took the Bear Creek Trail over 550 and went up to Oh! Point near Engineer Pass, then down to a jeep road, winding our way back to 550. Rob and Amy at Oh! Point.

Then it was over. It would have been sad if my legs still worked. Now that they're back to normal and my blisters are healed, I can't wait for next year!!!!

Solitude

I love how peaceful it is up in the foothills at 6am.
Lots of wildflower power today.

I'm trying so hard to not raise an asshole.

But there are times when I can't help but feel that the genetics are so not in my favor.

Like when I ask him to put the toilet seat down and he responds with WELL, I HAD TO PUT IT UP!

When he demands food service while he lounges on the couch in front of the TV.

Or when he doubts my math skills - okay, that one might be warranted - because I really don't hold a candle to his ridiculous Rainman abilities.

Even when we're driving - he will sometimes tell me he's sure I don't know where I'm going or that he doesn't think I'm driving properly.

And then there are these kinds of situations... that leave me in utter disbelief and entirely speechless:

I was working in the garden this morning; basking in the warmth of the sun and relishing the peace and quiet. Max woke up and came out to fined me - on my hands and knees - pulling weeds. HEY MOM! WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Hey Sweetie. I'm pulling weeds. CAN I HELP? Sure! So I keep pulling weeds and he continues to stand over me. Then, instead of just watching or actually helping, he starts barking orders at me. THERE'S SOME OVER THERE! GO GET THOSE OVER THERE! MOM, YOU MISSED SOME HERE! COME GET THESE HERE! OH! I DON'T KNOW IF YOU GOT ALL OF THAT ONE! THAT ONE'S GOING TO GROW BACK. YOU SHOULD TRY TO GET THE WHOLE WEED NEXT TIME!!!! YOU HAVE TO PULL MORE SLOWLY! WOW! THERE ARE A LOT OF WEEDS HERE! THIS IS REALLY GOING TO TAKE YOU A LONG TIME. YOU SHOULD GO FASTER, MOM!

I bite my lip and stifle the screaming voice in my head, "IF I NEEDED THAT KIND OF HELP, CHILD, I WOULD STILL BE MARRIED!"

Seriously. "YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!" is actually encoded.

Summer Camp

Last week the kids went to an "Outdoor Adventure Day Camp" everyday up in Boulder. Each day they participated in a different outdoor sport: hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, climbing, canoeing. I tried hard not to be jealous! AND on top of those activities, they practiced yoga, made music, played games, did origami, and created a whole lot of very crafty things! This was the scene each day when I picked them up... after about 2 minutes of driving... the sure sign of a most excellent day.

College tuition fund or Adventure Day Camp? Totally a no brainer.

Sunday Morning

"How are the kids doing?", everyone asks. I don't really know how to answer. I don't really know. They seem to be handling it fairly well so far, although it's hard to tell. If I push my guilt aside long enough to get a clear view, they seem pretty well adjusted. But when they have certain issues and moments, it's difficult to assess the source and I have to fight my natural tendency to accept the blame.
Max has definitely chosen to focus on the positive aspects of the situation: he likes having two rooms, different toys at each house, and TWO TV'S! For the most part he still handles everything with his normal confidence and exuberance. Yet there are times when he crumbles so easily - he overwhelmed with a lot of emotions. There's a distance and a maturity in his eyes when he looks at me. A bit of his pure, innocence has been stolen by circumstances beyond his control. He's definitely got a lot of questions he's not even sure how to ask... I really try to create a space for him to say or do what is necessary. It brings me immense joy when I see him smile like this these days. Not that it's so unusual for him to do so, but I don't take it for granted like I use to.
It's a bit more difficult to tell with Alex. There are days when I can tell that it all seems very natural to her... and then there are days where I feel her struggling with sadness and confusion. I've tried to create space for her to express herself as well. This was the purpose of the Fairy Garden - in a more literal sense. She loves to sit next to it... and collect bugs.
Lately, she has been collecting the isopods she finds and has made a home for them in a plastic container she keeps by her bed. Everyday she checks on them and rearranges their house. She was giving them a complete remodel this morning.

I see these little people handling this situation with such courage and compassion - they have taught me so much about how to live life. I'd like to think that I'm teaching them some good things as well: how to find the beauty and worthiness in this imperfect world - in themselves, to love and honor themselves, to ask for what they need, and to do what is necessary to preserve their truth. But, honestly, I think they already know these things. I think they're going to be just fine...

My Little Clementine

Today was Alex's dress rehearsal for her ballet Spring Showcase on Sunday. It was a stressful two hours of prep for her two minutes onstage; but it was definitely worth it!

Let's begin with the mandated bun. Each time I touched her thin, fine, not-really-long-enough-for-a-bun hair - to goop it up or strap it down with a pin - it brought her to tears. I had to use A LOT of pins - couldn't find any hairnets! She was very brave and loved it when it was finished - which was a huge relief. It could have easily gone the other way - I kept imagining lots of frustration and flying pins. I am incredibly proud of this masterpiece...
Next there was the make-up, which she insisted on having since Miss Alyissa mentioned that it was a good idea to wear it. Once she got over the disappointment that I didn't have any glittery eyeshadow it went pretty smoothly. She REALLY likes wearing make-up and favors the 'more is better' approach!

And finally... the costume. All I can say is that she's absolutely not a fan of tights right now. She's not even a fan of underwear. So there were a lot more tears (from her) and begging and pleading (from me) - to please hurry - everyone's waiting for you - look! all of the other girls have their tights on and they're so happy! - please get up off the floor - you can take them off right away after you're done - it's just for a few minutes - can you just please try it - maybe it won't feel as bad as you think? - do you just want to go home? - it's such a great color isn't it? - if you really don't want to wear it we'll just go home - I think you'll have lots of fun if you give it a chance. So... about 10 minutes of that and somehow I eventually convince her to put it on. She's still crying and I'm trying not to cry at this point also. When we left the dressing room she noticed all of the 'good luck' lipstick kisses on the wall and they made her laugh. Then, as she joined her other Clementines, she immediately started giggling and playing with them.

Drama? What drama?

She was fabulous in her performance and said she really liked being on stage. It was so much fun to watch her. Now we're at home... and those hideous tights and that scratchy tutu... "I will NOT take them off. I love them!"

A Soft Place to Fall

I am so grateful for this new house. Every morning I wake up to new flowers somewhere in the yard. A few weeks ago the large lilac bushes out back started blooming and the air has been filled with their fragrance every since. It's heavenly! I haven't felt this way in a very long time, so I couldn't really put my finger on it for awhile, but it's become pretty clear recently. This place feels like home.

KINA'OLE

Doing the right thing in the right way, at the right time, in the right place, to the right person, for the right reason, with the right feeling, the first time.

I have no idea.

This Fairy Garden was supposed to be for Alex - and we were supposed to build it together - but I became some obsessed freak and pushed her out of the way the moment she tried to put the house in the wrong spot.

Honestly, I'm telling you, her ideas lacked any base in reality.

Don't judge me.

You have no idea how hard it is to share the vision of some imaginary dwelling for some imaginary little people that may, or may not fly...

Listen. She can play with it when I'm finished. She can do whatever she wants then.

Okay. That's probably not gonna happen.

I will definitely find her another spot where she can build her very OWN Fairy Garden.

And I promise I won't even look at it.

The Easter Bunny is sometimes stupid.

Out of 80 shots this was the best picture I could get of the two of them together. That's Max doing his impression of smiling.
I said, "Show me how excited you are that the Easter Bunny came and left you gifts"...

Once he stopped talking about how stupid and boring bubbles are he kinda had some fun.
